Commentary: GENE SIMMONS Is Nowhere Near As Cool As He Thinks He Is
March 13, 2005Brian Moran of WCNC.com has written a commentary on last week's episode of NBC's "The Apprentice", featuring a guest appearance by KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons. An excerpt from his write-up follows:
"Gene Simmons' effort in this show probably deserves its own column but I'll do my best with a paragraph or two. When the gang gives their pitch, he breaks out his Morpheus impression complete with sunglasses and a deep dragging voice. Apparently, he still considers himself a sex symbol because his dialogue was fraught with bad sexual undertones. And when I say 'still,' please don’t interpret that as me considering him a sex symbol at some point. Now that I get a good look at his face, I see why he spent 75 percent of his career covered with three coats of body paint.
"Later on, it's evident that ['Apprentice' candidate] Erin and her pink-ness have drawn the eye of Mr. Simmons. The major crux of his courting tactics was jamming his finger in her ear. It's time to say it: Gene Simmons is nowhere near as cool as he thinks he is. In the last few years, I've seen him on 'Weakest Link', 'American Idol' and now 'The Apprentice'. Those aren't prudent career decisions made by a big-time icon. They're fleeting, last-gasp efforts to stay in the limelight and add to the supposed thousands of girls he's been with."
